Follow along to create a beautiful Geode painting.

Geodes are circular, hollow rocks with crystals lining the insides of them.

They can be a variety of beautiful colors depending on what the rock was exposed to as it was forming. The colors of a geode are usually monochromatic colors. What this means is the colors are all the colors of a single hue. I chose blues and purples to work with for my geode.

Please get your materials together and get ready to work at a nice clean workspace. To create a geode painting you will need the following materials:

-washable markers

-paper (watercolor or thick paper if you have it)

-a pencil

-a sharpie

-paintbrush

-water in a cup or bowl

-glitter (if you have it!)

-glue

-salt

Let's get ready to create! First, get ready to draw the outline of our geode. Notice how the shapes of the geodes in the example photos only vary a little. They are mostly circular but have a bit of bumpiness to their edges. Adding the bumps around the edges when we're drawing with our pencil will help make our shape appear more rock-like.

Once you've drawn your geode shape with a pencil you're ready to carefully outline with a sharpie.

Gather your monochromatic colored washable markers and get ready to make your first color outline. Outline inside of your sharpie line with your first color. Make the line nice and thick!

Leave some white space between this blue color line and our next color line. We will be drawing a line that follows the same shape as the lines before. You can use a pencil first if that helps!

Leave some white space between that second color line and the next line. This one will be done with sharpie again.

Using the same method, create two more colored lines on the inside of the sharpie line you just drew. You should have something that looks a bit like this:

Now we're ready to paint over our marker lines with water! Make sure you have a paintbrush and cup of water ready. Also, keep your salt nearby!

First, paint over your marker lines with water. Try to follow each layer of color with your paintbrush and let the colors blend together a bit.

Once your geode is completely painted over with water and is still wet grab your salt and sprinkle it on. Watch what happens!

The salt will absorb some of the water and create a very cool paint effect, it almost looks like tye dye.

Once your painting is totally dry, you can start the next step! Begin tracing around your geode with a sharpie, following the bumpy edges you made but keeping a white space between each line you draw.

Keep drawing lines till you fill up the whole page.

Now, it's time to add some glitter (if you have it!) Carefully trace around two of the colored lines with glue. Ask for some help applying glitter over some newspaper so it doesn't make a mess!

Once your glue dries display your gorgeous geode artwork somewhere everyone can see!
