First, make sure you have your supplies together:

You will need: - a pencil
- watercolor paint
- paintbrush
- 2 pieces of thick white paper
- scissors
- glue or glues stick
- newspaper
IF you don’t have watercolor paint, simply use some washable markers with water like we have in previous projects.
Start by painting one of your pieces of paper with blue and/or green paint. When you’re painting, use horizontal strokes in a wave like pattern. Try to use a lot of paint so our ocean has a lot of color.

Once you’ve painted that whole piece of paper blue, set it aside and let it dry. Get your second piece of paper ready to be painted. This ons is going to be our background. Try to paint a pretty sunset with yellows, oranges, reds and purples. Start with a large yellow circle in the center of the paper and then gradually move to the next color. You can let the colors blend together a bit to look more natural.

Once both of your paintings are dry, you’re ready for The next step. Carefully rip your blue waves painting into long horizontal strips. Rip up and away from the back of the paper to try to get some white edges on each strip. The white edges will be the whitecaps of the waves.

Lay out your strips and arrange them how you’d like them before you glue them down. Once you know the order that looks best (and most like real, overlapping waves), you can start gluing your first layer down somewhere a little below the middle of the sunset painting.

After you glue down the first layer, repeat with the rest of the layers til you use them all. I made sure to end my layers with one of the strips with corners so the bottom of the page looks straight. It’s ok if your strips go off the sunset paper a bit. Just glue them to the layer above and they will stay.

Now it’s time to cut out our sailboats from newspaper! I made two different sized sailboats with two semi-circle pieces and three triangles but feel free to get creative with your newspaper cutouts. Add seagulls, different shaped ships, or underwater life if you’d like!

Arrange your newspaper shapes how you’d like them, then glue the, down.
