- water
OPTIONAL SUPPLIES (if You have these items, this will make the final product come out brighter and is more fun!)

- plastic water bottle with the bottom cut off
- netting from orange or fruit bag
- larger Tupperware containers
- heavy duty tape
Let me start off by saying, this project is SO MUCH FUN! I promise you’ll have a great time ‘painting’ this with bubbles! Be sure to go outside for that part. 😉
To begin, either design and draw your own tropical fish or follow along below to create a cute but classic looking fish. Get your paper, pencil and sharpie ready to follow along!
Start with a long curved line In the middle of the paper.
![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/ba8911_7e2a111937a54ae1976b86ca77eeca15~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_980,h_1307,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/ba8911_7e2a111937a54ae1976b86ca77eeca15~mv2.jpg)
Next, draw another curved line underneath and connect it to the first to create the body of the fish.
Then, draw a shorter curved line on back of the fish for the tail.
![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/ba8911_d1afaea7534b4a95925d61b72789ab48~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_980,h_1307,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/ba8911_d1afaea7534b4a95925d61b72789ab48~mv2.jpg)
Draw another curved line on the bottom that mirrors the first one.
![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/ba8911_983ec5a3b38742caa3035222d7809b08~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_980,h_1307,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/ba8911_983ec5a3b38742caa3035222d7809b08~mv2.jpg)
Draw another curved line to connect those lines together to finish the tail.

Now draw some details like scales, fins, eyes, and lips.

![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/ba8911_3807e29bbef046e8b97645afcb68bcaf~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_980,h_1307,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/ba8911_3807e29bbef046e8b97645afcb68bcaf~mv2.jpg)
Here are my two fish together! One is a bit more unique, feel free to be imaginative with your fish and maybe make a few smaller ones next to it to keep It company.

Now it’s time to get ready for the painting part! This requires a bit of set-up and can get messy so please ask for help if you need it! Also, set up outside if you can to avoid getting paint everywhere.
If you have liquid watercolors, squeeze a bit of each color into your mini cup or plastic containers. Add a small amount of water to each cup. Not too much or else you’ll dilute your colors down!
![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/ba8911_e9ee632803b34ea1b67b3a187135cb84~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_980,h_1307,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/ba8911_e9ee632803b34ea1b67b3a187135cb84~mv2.jpg)
If you do not have liquid watercolors, simply dip your paintbrush into some water and get your watercolor paint very wet. Keep going back and forth between adding water and dipping your wet brush into your mini cup to leave some of the paint water in it. This takes a bit of time but once you feel that you’ve added enough pigment to the cup, continue along with the rest of the instructions!
![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/ba8911_a8bafec907974ea2895889bea4a6b49d~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_980,h_1307,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/ba8911_a8bafec907974ea2895889bea4a6b49d~mv2.jpg)
Add a few drops of dish soap to each mini cup and mix well.
![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/ba8911_4d472bb93585433685a2cdf20e0b70a6~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_980,h_1307,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/ba8911_4d472bb93585433685a2cdf20e0b70a6~mv2.jpg)
Now take your straw and BLOW OUT into each mini cup. Blow enough so that bubbles start bubbling up and over the edge of the cup. It almost will look like a mountain of bubbles when you do this. Do NOT breathe in when blowing through the straw. Please ask for help with this part of the project if you need it.
![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/ba8911_cd937d9bfd4b4438b51bc03ca99dd817~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_980,h_1307,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/ba8911_cd937d9bfd4b4438b51bc03ca99dd817~mv2.jpg)
Once you have your bubble mountains ready take your fish drawing and hold it face down towards the bubbles. Move the paper down onto the bubble mountains like you’re trying to pop the bubbles with your paper. Repeat a few times to layer different colors on your paper.
![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/ba8911_7deab1acaee645dd98f933d2a82e1d0a~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_980,h_1307,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/ba8911_7deab1acaee645dd98f933d2a82e1d0a~mv2.jpg)
If you have the extra supplies I listed above you can follow along to paint your fish in a different way! You can also add more color to the fish if you’ve already added some bubble paint with the first method.
First, cut a piece of the fruit netting that will fit over the bottom of the plastic water bottle. You will want to attachit with some heavy duty tape on the cut off end of the water bottle.
![](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/ba8911_3c69a55204e34ca9805dd144dfbf0e63~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_980,h_1456,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/ba8911_3c69a55204e34ca9805dd144dfbf0e63~mv2.jpg)
Pour your paint/soap mixtures into separate, larger Tupperware containers so the bottom of the water bottle can fit and be dipped into the water easily. Place your fish drawing on the ground or in the grass and get ready to get a little messy with bubble painting!
To start, dip your water bottle net side down into the soapy paint water. Take it out and blow through the mouthpiece of the water bottle. PLEASE remember to BLOW out like you’re blowing a bubble, not breathe in! As the colorful bubbles float out try to catch them on your paper! This part is fun! Keep trying with different colors until you’ve created a beautiful layered piece.

I loved how these came out so much that I ‘painted’ a few more plain sheets of paper to use later as backgrounds for other projects! If you have extra paper try making a few more with different color combinations!
