April 30 - Kindergarten, 1st Grade, & 2nd Grade

Create puffy paintings with salt and glue!

First, make sure you have your supplies together:

You will need: - a pencil

- a paper plate or cardboard box

- watercolor paint

- a paintbrush

- thick paper like card stock or watercolor paper

- white glue

To start, draw a nice simple design with your pencil. I cut my piece of card stock in half so I could create two different designs. Draw something that is not too detailed because we will be outlining our lines with elmer’s glue. If there are too many lines close to each other they will run together. Maybe make a drawing of a heart, a bird, a flower, or your favorite animal!

Now carefully outline your pencil lines with white elmer’s glue. Bstore using the glue make sure your glue nozzle is not all the way open so it comes out a bit slower. You can ask for help with this part if it seems too hard to trace. Try to be nice and even when you’re outlining your pencil lines. Also, start on one side of the paper and move to the other side. You need to be careful not to smudge the glue when outlining.

While your glue is wet pick up up your paper with two hands and carefully place it into your cardboard box or on your paper plate. The box or plate will catch any extra salt as we sprinkle it on. Get your salt ready and carefully sprinkle it over the wet glue. Again, please ask for help with this part of the project so we don’t make a huge mess!

Pick up your artwork carefully with two hands and shake the excess salt off into the box. Give it a few taps on the back of the paper to make sure you get all the extra salt off.

Now while the glue is still wet, It’s time to paint! Get your watercolor paints ready and start to paint the lines. When you’re painting don’t brush back and forth with your paintbrush. Instead, kind of dab the paint onto the salt lines. I left my background white to make my bird stand out but feel free to get creative and see what happens when you paint the background too!

Let your artwork dry completely before moving it around!

Tah-dah! Your awesome salt paintings are all done! Hang them some where so it can brighten everyone’s day!

St. Lawrence students, please send a picture of your finished artwork to stlawrenceartclass@gmail.com so I can display it on the school’s website!
